Frequently Asked Questions

– About Steroid and Hyaluronic injections

How do Steroid injections differ to Hyaluronic acid injections?

Both injections provide pain relief and reduce stiffness. A steroid injection works by inhibiting the inflammatory process, whereas HA injections replace the damaged hyaluronic acid within the synovial fluid of the joint. This acts as a natural cushion as well as reducing inflammation within the joint. For more information on HA injections, please read the FAQs on the Durolane® website here: www.oakneepainrelief.com/durolane/faq

Can I have an injection if I am waiting for surgery?

Steroid injection: Yes. There needs to be adequate time between your injection date and planned surgical date. For example, if waiting for a Total Knee Replacement 4-6 months is required after injection before surgery. If in any doubt please do not hesitate to discuss this with us.

Hyaluronic acid injection: Yes. As the medication works differently to steroid injections, there is no minimum time needed before surgery.

Can I have a steroid injection if I am on blood thinners?

Yes. However, there are some precautions we will advise you on with different types of blood thinners. For example, if you are on Warfarin an INR test will be needed to check you are within your reference range the week before your injection. If you take one of these 3 medications, Rivaroxaban, Apixaban or Dabigatran it is still possible to have an injection. However, this will be discussed at the time of your assessment. Aspirin and Clopidogrel do not require any additional monitoring.

Can I have more than one injection at the same time?

Yes, you can although this is assessed on an individual client basis. There is a maximum dose we can inject at any one time. For example, we could inject both knees at your appointment or up to three trigger fingers etc.

Can I have repeated injections?

Yes. Although this does depend on the area/condition being injected. We can guide you with regard to timescales based on available evidence and our clinical knowledge.

Should I keep taking my painkillers after my injection?

Yes, both steroid and hyaluronic acid injections do not work immediately. It can take 2 to 14 days for the medications to work . As you feel your pain changes, you can start to decrease your painkillers such as those bought over the counter e.g. Paracetamol, Ibuprofen. If you are on prescription medication from your GP, please discuss this with them prior to stopping or decreasing any medication.

Can I drive after my injection?

Yes. There is no restriction to driving after an injection following 15 minutes of monitoring. If you wish to wear a splint after your injection, eg, a wrist splint after Carpal Tunnel injection then you would need to organise someone to drive for you. Likewise, if you are very nervous about having an injection or needle-phobic we have found that having someone else drive for you can be helpful and one less thing to think about.

Will it hurt?
Not as much as you may think. Many clients describe having a corticosteroid injection as being similar to having a blood test. The injection process is very quick. Our injectors are highly skilled and will adopt the optimum approach and technique to minimise any discomfort.
Will I need time off work after my injection?

This really depends on the nature of your work and the type of injection you are having. More sedentary/lighter roles rarely need time off work. More manual or repetitive types of work often require 2-3 days off or lighter duties for joint injections or 10-14 days following soft tissue injections.

Will I have to wait after the injection?
We ask all clients to wait for 15 minutes post-injection so we can monitor for any rare adverse events such as an allergic reaction.
Can I bring someone into clinic with me?
Yes, you are more than welcome to bring a chaperone/relative in with you.
What should I wear for my appointment?

Loose comfortable clothing that allows access to the area to be injected.

Do you inject into the bone?

No. This is a common misconception. For joint injections, we inject into the joint space.
