Cortizone shot, Cortisone jab, Corticosteroid, Glucocorticoids, Hydrocortisone, Intra-articular injection or Steroid Injection?

All these different terms but are they the same thing?

In short, yes these terms all mean the same thing when talking about using steroids to treat muscle and joint pain. These terms are used interchangeably. Our American cousins tend to use the term, ‘Cortizone shot’ and the British simply use steroid injection most often. The ‘cortico’ refers to the drug family they belong to, which is the steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. This takes its name from a natural hormone our body creates called cortisol, which is our very own natural anti-inflammatory and is chemically similar to the stronger steroid we inject. There are several different types of steroids and we use a long lasting steroid called Kenalog to give the best results at our Derbyshire based clinic in Chesterfield.
